Dear O and C,
Happy Birthday Carson!!! I love and miss you so much! I wish I could give you a big squeeze today! You are a teenager today, 13 years old! I can't believe it. Where does the time go? You were 10 the last time I saw you. I hope and pray that you are doing well, and that you have an amazing birthday. There is so much about you I don't know. The only tid bit of information I have, is that you play baseball on my friends travel ball team. He said you look great; healthy and that you've leaned out quite a bit. I wish I could see the young man you have become. I love that fact that you are still playing baseball. Baseball was my true love growing up. My dream was always to play in the Major Leagues. I was very talented, but I didn't put enough time, work and effort into the game. I wish I had. My advice to you, is to keep playing, no matter what. As long as you still love the game, keep playing. Some of the people I played with in high school were nowhere near as talented as I was, but they kept playing. I remember one kid in particular, his name was Danny. He hardly ever touched the field in high school. I honestly wondered why he continued to play. Then, years later, I heard he was starting on the local junior college team. i couldn't believe it. I thought to myself, "there's no way!" But as i got older, I realized, you don't have to be the most talented player to continue playing. You just have to have the will and determination to get better every day. As long as you have that C, you can keep playing. I'll tell you another story. Your cousin J, is really good at baseball. He just finished his sophomore year, and helped his team finish second in a tough league. He pitches, and plays the outfield. He batted .300 this year. He is good enough to continue playing. Yet, he doesn't like the varsity coach, so he is not going play varsity baseball. I am so bummed about this, however, I can relate to this as well. When I was J's age, I was selected to play travel ball, which was a big deal when I was a kid, because there was only one select team in our area. I was very excited to play, until I got to know my coach. He was the biggest jerk on the planet. He did nothing but degrade me, and tell me what I did wrong. I hated playing for him. I finished my first season, because I was taught to never quit. However, I did not play the following season. He completely ruined my love for the game. I still played for my high school team, and one year of adult leage after high school, but it wasn't the same. There is a life lesson hidden in there though. You will not always like your coaches, or you bosses, but sometimes, you have to continue on anyway. You can't quit every team, or every job. There is value in sticking with something, even when it is uncomfortable. It teaches tenacity, and gives you a mindset that you can overcome challenges. Both of those assets are invaluable, and can only be taught by enduring uncomfortable situations. So, I hope you continue playing ball; even if you have a coach you don't like, or if it seems too difficult. Hang in there, and persevere. When you're my age, you will be happy you did. And you never know what opportunities might arise because of it.
O, how are you? I just recently found your ig account. I saw recent pictures of you. Wow, you have changed so much! I hardly recognized you! It looks like you are wearing contacts instead of glasses. You are a very handsome young man. You also posted about your track and field accomplishments. You set school records in the 100 and 50 meter races; congratulations, that's awesome! I'm very proud of you. I was also a sprinter in middle school. You definitely got your speed from me! It's really nice to know, that even though we don't know each other, we share things in common. It also looks like you have a really solid core group of friends, which is so valuable. Hang onto them as long as you can. Having good friends, who are also positive influences on you, is so important. I had a good group of friends in high school, but we were bad influences on each other. We encouraged each other to make poor decisions. I never will regret the friendships I had in high school; I just wished we had encouraged each other to do more positive and productive things, instead of encouraging each other to do things that got us in trouble. I also see you are very into religion, and god. I think that is great. You seem really grounded in who you are, and what you believe in. God can be such valuable guiding light, and moral compass. He can lead you away from temptation, and on a path of enlightenment, care, love, and compassion. Through Christ all things are possible. I hope you continue your faith in God as you move through this journey of life. I also see that you are going to HHS. I am really happy about this! That is such a wonderful high school, and I think you will be best suited there. It's a smaller setting, with individualized learning communities. It is definitely the best transition from your Montessori school. It also looks like you will continue on with track and field. That is so wonderful. Sports are such a great way to make new friends, teach life lessons, and be part of a community. I am very proud of you O. I hope that someday I am able to celebrate all of your accomplishments with you.
Please take good care. I love you both so much.
Love,
Dad
