Dear O and C,

Good luck on your first day of school!  I have no idea where you are attending school this year, but if it’s in my school district, then today is your first day.  I miss the days when I would take your first day of school pictures in front of our house.  Those days are long gone.  I wish I could give you the biggest hug, tell you “I love you,” and wish you the best of luck!  That’s not possible either.  So, instead, I’ll write you what I believe to be good advice on your first day of school.  Approach everything with a positive mindset, and a good attitude.  Not everything will go your way, so be sure to have a little bit of flexibility and leniency.  That way, you are sure to not be too disappointed when something doesn’t go your way.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Most teachers and school employees want you to have the best experience possible, and will be willing to help you out in just about any situation.  I was afraid to speak up when I was your age, out of fear and anxiety.  If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have definitely asked for help more often when I needed it.  Be warm, respectful, polite, and welcoming towards others.  Remember, no matter how nervous or anxious you might be, there is always someone out there feeling the same way you do, if not worse.  Be there to lend a hand, or to help those students.  It’s good practice for acquiring leadership skills, and making friends in the process.  Also, in my experience, I always feel better when I am able to help others.  Get involved.  Play sports, musical instruments, join a club, etc.  The more you get involved, the more you will feel like school is your community, and that you belong.  The more you belong, the more you will look forward to attending school every day.  Be a sponge.  Soak up as much information as you can.  Learn as much as you can.  Always strive to do your best.  And when you fall short of your own expectations, don’t be too hard on yourself.  Most importantly, know that I love you so, so much, and that I am thinking about you today, and every day.  I miss you terribly, and I love the both of you so much.

Love,

Dad
